Levigated chalk

Levigated chalk mixed in a glue solution form a chalk base for gilding the background or under the paint itself. It is necessary to have enough chalk base, to be able to spread it on the whole board. Usually we make about 3-12 layers. If we spread a layer of different density, we would risk the base cracking – and destroying. Every layer is spread after drying the former layer. At room temperature every layer dries about 3-24 hours. For speeding up we may use hair dryer.
